Urgent Help
& aid needed for Somalis
Senior Iranian cleric Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah
Safi-Golpaygani has called on the Muslims of the world to help the
famine-stricken people of Somalia in the holy month of Ramadan.
In a message issued on Friday, Ayatollah Safi-Golpaygani stressed that all Muslims should help their Muslim brothers and sisters in Somalia, and save the women and children of the African country from death. Drought and famine in the Horn of Africa nations have affected more than 11.8 million people across Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. Somalia is hardest-hit by what is considered as the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years. Earlier this week Somalia's charge d'affaires in Tehran Khalif Kadieh said five million Somalis were threatened by hunger. “Food for children and tents are the most important needs of the famine-stricken people, and Somalis are dying on a daily basis due to shortage of food, medications, and water,” Kadieh said. According to the United Nations, it is estimated that a quarter of Somalia's population of 7.5 million is now either internally displaced or living outside the country as refugees. The UN has declared famine in five regions in the drought-ravaged Somalia, warning that the international humanitarian response to the crisis has been insufficient. Source |
